Implementation - after a settlement is complete

When a Treaty settlement is complete, the claimant group will receive the assets that were agreed on during negotiations.

Managing the settlement assets

The PSGE will manage the settlement assets on the claimant group’s behalf. They’ll:

  • receive the cash and property agreed as part of the commercial redress
  • establish committees to look after environmental features, like rivers and lakes
  • work with the government departments who have commitments to the claimant group
  • apply for resource consents when needed.

Te Kāhui Whakatau will not be the main point of contact for your claimant group once settlement is complete. Te Kāhui Whakamana (Settlement Commitments), within Te Arawhiti, will take over that role. They’ll work to make sure that both the Crown and the post-settlement governance entity (PSGE) are able to meet the commitments made as part of the settlement.

Who's involved

The PSGE, government agencies and the Te Kāhui Whakamana (Settlement Commitments).

The PSGE will:

  • make decisions about how to use the cash and property for the benefit of the claimant community
  • work with government agencies who have commitments to the claimant group.

Government agencies:

  • work with the PSGE to ensure the Crown commitments to the claimant group are met
  • manage the transfer of property and any place name changes.

The Te Kāhui Whakamana (Settlement Commitments):

  • keeps a list of the commitments made in the settlement
  • works alongside agencies and the PSGE to ensure commitments are met.

Staying informed

The PSGE will keep you up to date with pānui. You can also check to see if your claimant group has a website or a Facebook page where you can get updates.
